UI Law's "Bridging the Gap" Helps Minorities Considering Legal Careers
The UI College of Law is sponsoring the 26th annual "Bridging the Gap" minority pre-law conference for students who are considering careers in law on Friday, March 28 at the Boyd Law Building on the UI campus.
This year's conference includes workshops on writing an effective personal statement, Law School Admission Test (LSAT) preparation, law school study skills, financing a legal education and opportunities in law-related fields. Participants will also attend a mock law school class, a law school recruitment fair, and a question-and-answer panel featuring minority lawyers.
Although aimed primarily at current undergraduate students, the conference is open to all minorities seeking more information about law school. The registration fee is $30, which includes materials and meals. Registration deadline is March 14.
According to William Hines, dean of the UI College of Law, the conference is the result of the college's recognition that minorities continue to be under-represented in the legal profession. He explained one reason for the disparity is that many minority students may be deterred from considering careers in law because they are not adequately informed about the law school admission process, the types of programs offered at law schools, and the variety of opportunities available in law-related fields.
"The conference is designed to address these deficiencies and, consequently, increase the number of minority law students by 'bridging' the information gap and providing minority students with the information they need," Hines said.
The conference is intended to give participants a taste of law school life that is further enhanced by the opportunity to meet and talk with legal professionals and with law students currently attending the UI College of Law. The law school recruiting fair will provide participants with an opportunity to speak to law school representatives and determine which law schools best meet their needs.
