Sener Reprises His 'Farewell' Solo Dance Production
Alan Sener, the new chair of the University of Iowa dance department, will reprise his first-ever solo concert, "Farewell," at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Sept. 11-13, in the Space/Place Theater of UI North Hall.
Sener premiered "Farewell" during the UI summer session. Working with UI alumnus composer Sean Seaton and a variety of visuals and texts, Sener assembled an evening of multi-media dance/theater that addresses the many ways that we "bid farewell," from the pain of loss to the excitement and uncertainty of change.
"Some of these themes address the challenges of coming to terms with loss," Sener explains, "of facing the prospect of change, of letting go of one's past, of processing the bitter-sweetness of nostalgia, of welcoming the anticipation of moving on ..."
The mood ranges from comedy to pathos -- from a pointed rap about the familiar annoyances of life in Iowa City to a grandson's letter to a departed grandfather, reminiscing about their experiences attending baseball games.
Admission to "Farewell" will be $10 ($5 for UI students). Audience members under 12 years of age will be admitted free.
Tickets may be purchased in advance from the University Box Office in the Iowa Memorial Union. In addition to window sales at the Iowa Memorial Union, the University Box Office may be reached by phone at 319-335-3041 or toll-free 800-346-4401. The fax number is 319-335-3407. Any remaining tickets will be on sale at the door.
The dance department is a unit of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
