WOW! 2003 Activities Are Set For New, Returning Students

WOW! 2003, the annual University of Iowa Weeks of Welcome events that acquaint UI offices, programs, resources and the Iowa City community to new and returning students, as well as faculty and staff, begins Saturday, Aug. 23, and continues through Tuesday, Sept. 9.

During Weeks of Welcome, students can take part in events such as the Hawkeye Carnival and Welcome Cookout, Here at Last, the Downtown Street Festival and other events designed to help them meet fellow students, faculty and staff, and to explore community volunteer and other activities. All events are free.

WOW! 2003 is coordinated by the Office of Student Life, University Life Centers at the Iowa Memorial Union, Orientation Services, the Office of Admissions and the Department of Residence Services in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President for Student Services.

A few of the many WOW! 2003 events are listed here:

Sunday, August 24
Hawkeye Carnival & Welcome Cookout (4 - 7 p.m. [Cookout, 5 - 7 p.m.] Hubbard Park, Iowa Memorial Union)
Students get up close and personal with current UI athletes and coaches.

WOW! Here at Last... (7:45 p.m., Hancher Auditorium)
A welcome and spirit program to introduce new Hawkeyes to their new community, teach them about Iowa's traditions, and meet UI personalities.

WOW! Fireworks (approx. 8:45 p.m., viewing area: Hancher Auditorium Patio, shoot site: Hancher Auditorium Green)
The university community is excited to welcome students back and wants everyone to know it with a bang.

Tuesday, August 26
Welcome to the Library. (1 - 4 p.m., Main Library)
Free popcorn and other goodies will be served during the 30-minute tour of the Main Library's collections and service areas. Tours begin on the half-hour until 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, August 27
Get Hypnotized! (8 p.m., Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union)
Chuck Milligan, one of the country's hottest comedian-hypnotists, performs.

Friday, August 29
Downtown Street Festival (5 p.m., Downtown Iowa City Ped Mall)
Hit the hippest party in town to see and be seen. Explore all that downtown Iowa City has to offer while you have some serious fun dancing in the streets to music provided by KRUI.

Wednesday, September 3
Community Service Fair (10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Kautz Plaza on the T. Anne Cleary Walkway)
Learn how to give back to the Iowa City community by donating your time and talent. A wide range of service agencies will be on hand to provide students with information on how to become involved and volunteer.

Thursday, September 4
Ice Cream Social and Student Activities Fair (11 a.m. - 2 p.m., Hubbard Park, Iowa Memorial Union)
Students can learn how to get involved in UI's student organizations while enjoying a refreshing midday treat.

Friday, September 5
Comedian C. Willi Myles (8 p.m., Wheelroom, Iowa Memorial Union)
His unique brand of comedy has wowed audiences from coast to coast. Myles has performed and toured with The Ojays, The Beach Boys, Sinbad and Dennis Miller.

Saturday, September 6
Giant Chess Game and Chess Championships (11 a.m. -7 p.m., Iowa Memorial Union and Downtown)
Members of the UI Chess Federation compete for the state championships in the IMU, while demonstration games are played with a giant chess set downtown. Will continue through Sunday, September 7.

Night Games (10:30 p.m. - 1:30 a.m., UI Fieldhouse)
Late night fun with basketball, volleyball, racquetball, swimming and rock climbing.

Tuesday, September 9
IMU Open House (11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Iowa Memorial Union)
New students can explore the IMU, the place where students gather and meet, and learn what services and opportunities the Union has to offer.

In addition, several campus direction booths will help new students find their way around campus on Monday, August 25, and Tuesday, August 26. The booths will be staffed from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Pentacrest East, the northeast corner of Hubbard Park and on the T. Anne Cleary Walkway.
