Two Physicians To Join UI Family Care

University of Iowa Family Care leaders announced today that a pair of physicians with ties to the UI will join the staffs of two of their family care clinics in Johnson County in July 2003.

Harriet Echternacht, M.D., will join the staff of UI Family Care - Southeast Iowa City on July 7. On that same date, Jason Powers, M.D., will begin seeing patients at UI Family Care Center - North Liberty. Both physicians currently serve patients at the Family Health Centre in Coralville.

UI Family Care operates a network of physician clinics affiliated with University of Iowa Health Care. Those sites include the Family Care Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics, UI Family Care - Southeast Iowa City, UI Family Care Center - North Liberty, Lone Tree Family Practice Center, in addition to locations in Perry, Lowden, Centerville, Sigourney, Belle Plaine, Wapello, Marengo, Toledo and an oncology practice in Ottumwa.

Echternacht is a specialist in family medicine. She attended the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. She completed her residency at UI Hospitals and Clinics and began her practice in Coralville in 1995. Echternacht specializes in women's health care, preventative health, support of patients' alternative lifestyles, well baby, children and adolescent health.

UI Family Care - Southeast offers complete family medicine and geriatric medicine services to patients in its location at 1130 Scott Blvd., next to Legacy Point. Family practitioners Adelaide Gurwell, M.D., and Michael Jurgens, M.D., geriatrician Mathew Lanternier, M.D., and certified physician assistant Heather Haug, currently staff the clinic.

Powers is a family medicine specialist and a native of Iowa City. He attended the UI Carver College of Medicine and served his residency at Swedish Family Medicine, University of Colorado, Littleton, Colo. He has worked in Coralville since 2002.

UI Family Care Center - North Liberty is a primary care clinic located at 3 Lions Drive (Highway 965) in North Liberty offering family medicine, internal medicine and women's health services including obstetrical care. The facility features rehabilitation services and provides visiting psychiatrists to meet the behavioral health needs of patients. Rayna Jobe, M.D., Ann Sullivan, M.D., Britt Marcussen, M.D., Kavitha Bhat Schelbert, M.D., internal medicine physician Leslie Riley, M.D., and obstetrician/gynecologist Marygrace Elson, M.D., currently staff the North Liberty site.
