The MBA Career Services staff at the University of Iowa's Henry B. Tippie School of Management has named Brian Uhlmann its Alumni Mentor of the Year. Uhlmann, a Class of 2000 MBA graduate, was honored April 11 at the University Athletic Club in Iowa City for his career coaching and counseling efforts.
The Williamsburg, Iowa native currently works at ACNielsen in Schaumburg, Ill. as an associate client manager on the SC Johnson Team.
The award recognizes Uhlmann's dedication to assisting Tippie MBA students with career planning and knowledge regarding marketing. Last semester, Uhlmann arranged for first-year MBA student Andres Ayala to "job shadow" him. Uhlmann arranged for Ayala to participate in five interviews and helped him in the interview process.
Uhlmann also informally advised the Graduate Marketing Association (GMA), arranging guest speakers for the group next fall. Uhlmann also assisted with an MBA alumni reception the GMA hosted in Chicago. During the reception, MBA candidates were given the opportunity to speak to Uhlmann and seek advice. In a similar situation, he also participated in the MBA Career Services annual Networking Reception, mentoring first-year MBA students.
"Brian is a great role model. He has done more this year than any other alumnus has done to help, advise and place Tippie MBA candidates and to make the program better. He's always willing to help both Tippie students and staff," said Ayala.
"Receiving the Alumni Mentor of the Year award is a very special accomplishment. Considering how many alumni give their time and effort to the MBA Program, it is truly an honor to be selected for this award. I hope my actions encourage current students to stay involved after graduation. Alumni support is a very important component of a successful MBA Program," Uhlmann said.
The MBA Alumni Mentoring Program is designed to match incoming MBA students with alumni whose backgrounds and career interests are similar. The alumni then provide the students with advice regarding career choice, critique their resumes, and provide general academic and professional insights.
