Emeritus Professor Voxman Receives National Award

Himie Voxman, former director of the University of Iowa School of Music and one of the UI's most distinguished emeritus faculty, has been named a Lowell Mason Fellow of MENC: The National Association for Music Education.

Established in 1907, MENC is the world's largest arts education association, with nearly 100,000 members. Lowell Mason Fellows are selected by MENC to honor outstanding music educators and advocates for music education. The award was named for Lowell Mason, who is credited with establishing music education in public schools.

Recipients must be nominated for the honor by someone familiar with their careers and work, and each nomination is accompanied by a $1000 donation to MENC's Fund for the Advancement of Music Education. Voxman was nominated for the award by Hermann Knoll of Hal Leonard Publishers, "in recognition of a significant and lasting contribution to music education."

Voxman is among the UI's most honored faculty and administrators. A 1933 graduate of the university, he served as director of the UI School of Music from 1954 until his retirement in 1980. Among many other honors, the UI Music Building was named in his honor in 1995 and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Clarinet Association in 2000.

He also received the 1983 Edwin Franko Goldman Citation of the American Bandmaster's Association, in recognition of his "conspicuous service in the interest of bands and band music in America"; the 1991 First-Place Award of Merit from the National Federation of State High School Music Associations; and the Medal of Honor from the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic.

The UI community helped celebrate Voxman's 90th birthday last fall with a series of concerts and a reunion for his many former students. Although he retired from the UI more than 20 years ago, Voxman continues to teach private clarinet students.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
