Preparedness Conference Set For April 9

Public health preparedness is the topic of a statewide conference to be held at the Iowa Memorial Union on Wednesday, April 9. "Revisiting the New Reality: Improving Iowa's Preparedness Capacity" will examine local, state and national activities designed to improve emergency preparedness.

"The nation faces new and emerging threats associated with biological and chemical agents," said Christopher Atchison, director of the Iowa Center for Public Health Preparedness, based in the University of Iowa College of Public Health. "This conference builds on a related meeting held one year ago. Speakers and participants will review recent developments in emergency planning and response, and explore additional steps needed to be better prepared in the future."

Issues to be discussed at the conference include information and communication systems, biological agents and public health, hospital surge capacity, agriculture and food safety, and public safety and public health. The intended audience includes leaders, administrators and educators from public health, hospitals and other health care organizations, and emergency management agencies; environmental health specialists; law enforcement officers; firefighters; laboratorians; physicians; nurses; pharmacists; veterinarians; extension specialists; and those with responsibilities or interests in Iowa's preparedness capacity.

Conference details, including a registration form, are available online at www.public-health.uiowa.edu/icphp/conference/index.html.

The conference is jointly sponsored by the Iowa Center for Public Health Preparedness, funded by a grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention through a cooperative agreement with the Association of Schools of Public Health; the Iowa Association of Local Public Health Agencies; and the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and the UI College of Pharmacy, in cooperation with the UI College of Nursing.
