Undergraduate minority enrollment on the rise at University of Iowa

The University of Iowa had its highest enrollment of undergraduate minority students in the Fall 2002 semester, according to a report prepared for the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. The increase parallels the University’s highest-ever enrollment of new freshmen.

Total minority enrollment for the current academic year increased slightly over last year. A total 2,568 minority students enrolled in Fall 2002, an increase of 45 over last year's total of 2,523. Undergraduate minority enrollment is 1,679, up 62 from last year's total of 1,617. The number of graduate and professional students was down to 889 from last year's total of 906, paralleling lower graduate enrollments in general over the last few years.

The figures for minority enrollment do not include foreign students who are attending the UI on student visas. This year, there are 2,142 foreign students on campus. Last year's figure was 2,026.

“Through positive, affirmative attitudes toward human relations, the University is committed to continuous progress in creating an inclusive and diverse community,” said Willard L. “Sandy” Boyd, UI Interim President. “I am glad that our minority student enrollment has increased this year. We are working hard to make those numbers higher.”
