UI Offers Five-Week Course On Statistical Software 'Fathom'

Math and science educators who use or are considering using Key College Publishing's new dynamic statistical software program "Fathom" may be interested in taking a five-week introductory course on the University of Iowa campus starting Monday, Nov. 11.

Teresa Finken, a lecturer in the UI College of Education, will teach the course in Room N106 of the Lindquist Center from 7 to 9 p.m. on five consecutive Mondays: Nov. 11, Nov. 18, Nov. 25, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9.

"Fathom" is fast becoming the premier tool for dynamic, data-driven explorations in statistics and data analysis. Coming from three years of National Science Foundation–funded research and development by the authors of "Sketchpad", "Fathom" provides a dynamic computer learning environment that gives students the power to gather, explore, and analyze data, and to better understand statistics. More information about the software is available online at www.keycollege.com.

The course carries 1 hour of credit, and students must be registered with the UI, either as a full-time or a special student. For more information, contact Peggy Shannon, program associate in the department of curriculum and instruction, at (319) 335-5609, or via email at peg-shannon@uiowa.edu. When calling, be sure to ask for information about Course No. 7E/S/U:196, Topics in Curriculum & Instruction, Section 3.
