Yeadon's UI Guest Recital Will Feature German Songs Sept. 15

Soprano Eva Pearl Yeadon will present a program of 19th-century German art songs for a university of Iowa guest recital, at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, in Harper Hall of the Voxman Music Building on the UI campus.

Yeadon, who teaches at Southwest Missouri State University, will be joined by her faculty colleague Shun-Lin Chou, piano, and clarinetist Kyle Vesely of Iowa City. Their performance will be free and open to the public.

Three groups of works will be featured on the program: Beethoven's song cycle "An die ferne Geliebte" (To the distant beloved), a set of songs by Johannes Brahms, and Six Songs, op. 103, for soprano, clarinet and piano by Ludwig Spohr.

Completed in April 1816, "An die ferne Geliebte" was originally titled simply Sechs Lieder (Six songs), but the name was changed as a marketing ploy to appeal to those with a desire for novelty. One of the first cycles of songs written around a single subject or story, it tells the story of a man's comparison of his lost love to the environment in which he has chosen to grieve.

Over a prolific 43 year period Brahms published 190 solo songs, two songs with obbligato viola, five songs for one or two voices, 20 duets and 60 quartets for solo voices, all with piano accompaniment -- and the songs are only a small part of his total compositional output. The songs chosen for this performance were not composed as a set, but taken together they provide a colorful sample of Brahms' versatility.

Although little remembered today, Spohr was a multi-dimensional artist who was a very active part of Germany's musical life in the early 19th century. He maintained an active career as a conductor and an early advocate of Wagner' s music, was well known as a composer and enjoyed an international reputation as a renowned violinist, attracting students from across Europe. While he wrote a considerable amount of music for the violin, Spohr also wrote in all the major genres of the time. His orchestral music includes 10 symphonies, he wrote various large-scale choral works, and his operatic efforts include the first major opera on Goethe's "Faust."

Spohr also wrote songs, many of them grouped into cycles. The Six Songs, op. 103, written in 1837, are linked not by a story or texts from a single poet, but rather by a general theme of personal introspection. The cycle ends with a hopeful interpretation of a new season, the text and music beautifully exemplifying all that spring offers, not just for renewal in nature, but for rekindling individual happiness.

Yeadon made her European debut in 1980, when Giancarlo Del Monaco engaged her as a dramatic soprano at the Kassel Staatstheater in Germany. She counts more than 35 leading operatic roles, including the Brunnhilda in "Die Walkuere" and "Siegfried" for the Zagreb, Yugoslavia, Opera. She has made guest appearances throughout Europe, Eastern Europe and America in concert and as an opera specialist, and tours regularly in Europe and Scandinavia with the Missouri Chamber Players.

Her Television credits include the R.A.I Italian TV special, "Great Tenors: Mario del Monaco," and the C-Span 1994 special "The Lincoln Douglas Debates." She has been featured on several recordings including the Vivaldi Chamber Mass for Crystal Records, John La Montaine's "Nine Lessons of Christmas," Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" and Haydn's Sixteenth Mass. Upcoming appearances include concerts for Harrisburg Opera in January 2003; the World Premiere of "Chazal" in April 2003; a performance of "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" with the Missouri Chamber Players in April 2003, and numerous recitals.

Shun-Lin Chou has appeared internationally in concerto, solo, and chamber performances. A first-place winner in numerous piano competitions, he has performed to critical acclaim with orchestras in the National Concert Hall in Taipei, Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, the Eastman Theatre and other major concert halls.

Chou completed an around-the-world recital tour to Europe and Asia in 1999, with performances in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the United States. His solo appearances included the Debut! series at the Rochester Jewish Community Center, a recital as guest artist of the 1998 Starr Young Artist Competition at the University of Arkansas, a recital at the Brno Conservatory in Czech Republic, and an inaugural gala recital for the Yuhsien Hall, a state-of-the-art 2,000-seat concert hall in his native Taiwan. Recent performances include guest appearances at the University of Northern Iowa Keyboard Series, Fort Hays (Kansas) State University, the Sedalia Symphony, the Central Oklahoma Concert Series, and Springfield Symphony.

Vesely began his performance career in St. Louis in 1997 while performing with the Hawthorne Players. Since then he has become an active chamber musician in the Ozarks performing with the Missouri Chamber Players and the Winds of Hope, an ensemble that raises money for needy children. Vesely has been on the faculty of the Missouri Fine Arts Academy for the past two years.

While studying at Southwest Missouri State University, Vesely has held principle chairs in the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Student/Faculty Clarinet Quartet and the Missouri Intercollegiate Wind Ensemble. He has appeared in concert with faculty and visiting artists.
