Release: Oct. 24, 2002

Local Student Is Member Of 2002-03 Hawkeye Marching Band

Members of the 2002-2003 Hawkeye Marching Band at the University of Iowa have been announced, along with their class standing at the UI and the instrument they play with the band. (See complete list below)

The band performs under director Kevin Kastens. Under his direction, the band puts 230 students on the field for its performances. They perform at pre-game and half time of all Hawkeye home football games, and travel to at least one away game each fall.

This year they will travel to Bloomington, Minn., for the game with the University of Minnesota on Nov. 16, and, of course, they will accompany the Hawkeyes to any bowl games.

They will also perform at the UI School of Music's annual Band Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 12 and 13, in Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus. A celebration of bands and band music, the Band Extravaganza features the top groups in the UI band department: the Symphony Band, the Johnson County Landmark jazz band and the Hawkeye Marching Band.

Kastens is associate professor of music and assistant director of bands at the UI. He directs the Hawkeye Marching Band and the Concert Band, teaches band arranging and marching band techniques, and is the director of the All-State Music Camp.

Before coming to the UI in 1998 Kastens served five years at the University of Missouri, where he directed the marching band, Marching Mizzou, and the pep band for men's basketball games. He also conducted the Symphonic Band and taught several music education courses.

Before moving to Missouri Kastens was assistant director of bands at Indiana University (1987-93) and was a high school band director in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. At Indiana he was the assistant director of the Marching Hundred and taught several music education courses.

Kastens has presented workshops and clinics on marching band techniques and computer drill design and appeared as guest conductor throughout the Midwest and Canada. He has had numerous articles published on instrumental music education in The Instrumentalist and other professional publications. A leader in the field of computer-assisted marching band drill design, he helped develop "Drill Quest," a drill-writing software program
