Children's Hospital of Iowa heart specialist, patients to attend national conference

An 11-year-old Iowan who received advanced care for a serious heart disorder at Children's Hospital of Iowa will address a national meeting in Ypsilanti, Mich. this week.

More than 40 heart care specialists, patients and families from Iowa will attend the "Young ICD Connection 2002" Oct. 4-5. The patients all have an implanted cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), advanced technology that can prevent sudden cardiac death. An ICD is implanted in the body with wire leads running from the ICD into the heart. The ICD can detect life-threatening disturbances in the heart's rhythm and deliver electrical energy to the heart to correct the problem.

The meeting is an opportunity for patients with ICDs to meet and talk openly and honestly with their peers. The event includes sessions for both teens and adults. Eleven-year-old Logan Piper of Keokuk, Iowa will provide his perspective to the attendees as a special guest. Piper received an ICD from Ian Law, M.D., University of Iowa assistant professor (clinical) of pediatrics and a heart specialist with Children's Hospital of Iowa.

"This meeting is truly a special opportunity for specialists, patients and families affected by heart disease to discuss their concerns, trade tips and extend their support networks," Law said.

The contingent from Iowa will be the second largest in attendance, after the host state of Michigan. Grants from ICD manufacturers and the UI Foundation will pay the expenses for the Iowa group.
