Local UI student interns in Washington D.C.

(Student name) of (hometown), is on of seven University of Iowa students in the Washington Center Internship Program in Washington, D.C.

(Student name), a/an (major) at the UI, is working at the (agency or firm) this semester, gaining valuable experience in the professional arena of the nation's capital.

Students earn UI academic credit while participating in the program, which is comparable in cost to earning the same amount of credit on campus.

Founded in 1975, the Washington Center has provided over 25,000 students with a comprehensive, participatory learning experience through its affiliation with hundreds of colleges and universities nationwide. Its program places students of all majors with internships that offer substantive, professional work. Students also complete one academic course, attend the Presidential Lecture Series given by civic leaders, and participate in the Congressional Breakfast Series with members of Congress.

David Fitzgerald, a Career Center program manager, helps arrange the Washington D.C. internships. He serves on the Washington Center's Liaison Advisory Board, a group of university representatives who provide input on the Center's operations and programs.

"The UI has had a relationship with the Center for over 20 years; 580 UI students have been placed in for-credit internship programs at governmental agencies, congressional offices, law firms, non-profit agencies, and news bureaus," Fitzgerald said.

This semester's participants, are listed below by hometown, major and their internship placement:

ANKENY: Andrew Elsbecker, political science/ sociology, Kieloch Consulting.

CARROLL: Lisa Frischmeyer, political science/ sociology, U.S. Department of Justice, Office of International Affairs.

DAVENPORT: Melissa Grothus, sociology, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-New York).

EMMETSBURG: Tara Stillman, English/ pre-law, Federal Trade Commission Bureau of Consumer Protection.

FORT DODGE: Christopher Meyer, political science, Chwat and Co., a government relations consulting firm.

CHICAGO, ILL: Kathleen Hawking, political science, Palumbo and Cerrell, a lobbying firm.

EUREKA, MO.: Kristen Lueken, education, Environmental Protection Agency.
