UI Participates In Anti-Hate Panel Discussion
Several UI officials will participate in a panel discussion of hate-based
acts against Muslim and Middle Eastern people in a public discussion sponsored
by Johnson County's Hate Acts Rapid Response Team (HARRT).
"Building Bridges: Addressing the Anti-Muslim/Middle Easterner Climate"
will be held Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. in Meeting Room A in the Iowa City
Public Library. Refreshments will be provided.
Among those from UI who will participate are Diane Finnerty, diversity resources
coordinator in the Office of Affirmative Action; Helen Jameson of International
Student Programs; and Shams Ghoneim of the Muslim Public Affairs Council.
The panel will be moderated by Monique DiCarlo of the UI's Women's Resource
and Action Center.
Also participating are Amnon Kohen, an Israeli living in Iowa City, and
Taha Tawil, imam of Mother Mosque of America.
The forum is sponsored by the UI department of public safety, UI International
Programs, UI Muslim Student's Association, UI Office of Affirmative Action,
UI Women's Resource and Action Center, Consultation of Religious Communities,
Coralville Police Department, Iowa City Human Rights Commission, Iowa City
Police Department, Johnson County Sheriff's Department, Human Rights Commission
and Education Committee and the Muslim Public Affairs Council. For information
