WSUI's 'Java House' broadcasts set for Fridays in June
WSUI continues its "Iowa Talks Live from the Java House" show
in June, with shows about children's books, alternative medicine, and the
Iowa Summer Rep season. Local roots musician Dave Zollo will also perform
live June 28 to close out the month.
WSUI AM 910, UI's public radio station serving Eastern Iowa, broadcasts
the program at 10 a.m. on Fridays from the coffee house at 211 E. Washington.
Hosted by Ben Kieffer, the show combines live local music with lively talk
about contemporary arts, community, and cultural issues. The live Friday "Iowa
Talks" show is free and open to the public at the Java House. It is also
broadcast in streaming audio at http://wsui.uiowa.edu.
Details about the Friday broadcasts in June include:
-- June 7, "Crafting Children's Books": Award-winning children's
book author Jacqueline Briggs-Martin of Cedar Rapids will talk about creating
picture books and why they're not just for kids. Christopher Merrill, author
and director of the University of Iowa International Writers' Program, will
share insights about children's books from around the world. The show includes
live music by composer and guitarist Don Chamberlain and vibist Rich Martin.
-- June 14, "Alternative Medicine Matters": More and more people
are using alternative and complementary medicine, such as herbal therapy,
acupuncture, healing touch, chiropractic, massage therapy, homeopathy and
hypnosis. Dr. Nicole Nisly, director of the Complementary and Alternative
Medicine Clinic at the University of Iowa, and Michael Santangelo, director
of Eastwind School of Holistic Healing, will discuss the growing interest
in alternative medicine and how traditional medical practices are beginning
to incorporate alternative therapies. Live music will be performed by flutist
-- June 21, "Iowa Summer Rep 2002": Artistic Director Tisch Jones
and Eric Forsythe of the University of Iowa theatre department preview Iowa
Summer Rep 2002. This year's Summer Rep is a festival of plays by Atlanta
author Pearl Cleage. Gayane Torosyan will host the program, featuring live
music by The Wheeler-Mazunik Jazz Duo.
-- June 28, "Roots Music with Dave Zollo": Dave Zollo performs
live and talks about his latest CD "The Big Night." The new CD "rolls
with a steady backbone like the subtle landscape that gave it life,"
according to No Depression Magazine. Zollo is also the founder of Trailer
Records, a label dedicated to Iowa-based artists working in the various manifestations
of Americana/roots music.
