Upward Bound students may be eligible for free meals during summer

The University of Iowa Upward Bound Project announces its sponsorship this year of the Summer Food Service Program.

Under the federal program, students enrolled in the UI's Upward Bound Project may be eligible to receive free meals on the UI campus, based on household size and income. Meals -- including breakfast, lunch and dinner -- will be provided from June 10 to Aug. 2 at Burge Hall Food Service on the UI campus. Breakfast will be served from 6:30 to 8:15 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The UI Upward Bound Project serves high school students that are accepted to the program from the communities of Burlington, Davenport, Fort Madison, Muscatine, West Liberty and Iowa City.

SFSP income eligibility guidelines for 2002 are as follows:

-- Household size of 1, with a yearly income of no more than $15,982, a monthly income of no more than $1,325 and a weekly income of no more than $306.

-- Household size of 2, with a yearly income of no more than $21,479, a monthly income of no more than $1,790 and a weekly income of no more than $414.

-- Household size of 3, with a yearly income of no more than $27,066, a monthly income of no more than $2,256 and a weekly income of no more than $521.

-- Household size of 4, with a yearly income of no more than $33,653, a monthly income of no more than $2,722, and a weekly income of no more than $628.

-- Household size of 5, with a yearly income of no more than $38,240, a monthly income of no more than $3,187 and a weekly income of no more than $736.

-- Household size of 6, with a yearly income of no more than $43,827, a monthly income of no more than $3,653 and a weekly income of no more than $843.

-- Household size of 7, with a yearly income of no more than $49,414, a monthly income of no more than $4,118 and a weekly income of no more than $951.

-- Household of 8, with a yearly income of no more than $55,001, a monthly income of no more than $4,584 and a weekly income of no more than $1,058.

For each additional family member, add $5,487 to the annual income, $466 to the monthly income and $108 to the weekly income.

Children of eligible students who are members of a food stamp household or Family Investment Program (FIP) household are automatically eligible to receive free program meal benefits at Burge Hall as well. Foster children are eligible for free meal benefits regardless of household income.
