Althen gives farewell address at May 17 Graduation and Global Scholar Celebration

Gary Althen, director of the University of Iowa Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), will give the keynote address focusing on the challenges of dealing with people who are different at the International Programs' Graduation and Global Scholars Celebration Friday, May 17. The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m. in the International Center Lounge on the UI campus. Althen will speak at approximately 5:20 p.m.

Honored at the reception will be about 215 graduating international students as well as UI students who received scholarships and fellowships supporting international study and research, and UI students completing international and area studies majors, minors and certificates.

This is Althen's final address to graduating students as he is retiring from the UI after three decades in the international student-advising field. Althen has advised thousands of students from across the world in a distinguished career that has seen his knowledge transferred into print in his well-known book, "The Handbook of Foreign Student Advising." A revised edition of "American Ways," also written by Althen, is scheduled for publication later this year. He has also held many national leadership positions, including president and director of NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

The Office of International Students and Scholars is part of UI International Programs, which consist of a number of offices, centers, degree programs, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost and dean for international programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and community and promote global scholarship, research and teaching.

The International Center is located at the end of Ferson Avenue in Iowa City, off of Park Road or by foot up the stairway from Riverside Drive.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The Graduation and Global Scholars Celebration provides many visual opportunities since parents and friends of graduating students often attend.
