UI Museum of Art presents exhibition of MFA works May 10-June 2

The University of Iowa Museum of Art will present “MFA 2001-2002,” an exhibition of works by recipients of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from the UI School of Art and Art History. The works will be on view from Friday, May 10, through Sunday, June 2 in the Carver Gallery of the UI Museum of Art.

A reception will be held 3-5 p.m., Friday, May 10 in the old member’s lounge at the museum to celebrate the opening of the exhibition and honor the student artists.

Both the exhibition and the reception will be free and open to the public.

An annual event, the MFA exhibition includes works by students who graduated during the past year from the UI School of Art and Art History with a Master of Fine Arts degree.

Departments represented are ceramics, design, drawing, metalsmithing, painting and printmaking. More than 30 students will exhibit their works this year.

This year’s exhibition was organized by Anne Cushwa, a graduate research assistant at the Museum of Art. She commented, “Each artist represented in the MFA 2001-2002 exhibition took a different path to Iowa City. These artists may have never imagined themselves at graduate school, but here they created diverse ceramics, drawings, graphic designs, jewelry, sculptures, paintings and prints. What links them all is their commitment to creation and their shared journey through the university.

“While this exhibition represents an end to their time at the university, it is truly a beginning. The future is unknowable, but their talents, friendships, struggles and achievements during these years in Iowa have prepared them to move forward. If their successes here are any indication, these artists will continue to grow, create, and give beauty and joy to the world around them.”

M.C. Ginsberg Objects of Art, Inc. of Iowa City is the corporate sponsor for events at the UI Museum of Art during the 2000-2001 season, through the University of Iowa Foundation.
