Janis Named UI College Of Law Scholar

College of Law Professor Mark D. Janis has been named the H. Blair and Joan V. White Intellectual Property Law Scholar for a three-year term effective July 1, 2002. The appointment of Janis as a Collegiate Scholar was announced this week by College of Law Dean N. William Hines.

Janis joined the Iowa law faculty in 1995 after practicing patent law for six years within large intellectual property law firms in Indianapolis. He earned his B.S. degree in engineering with distinction from Purdue in 1986 and his J.D. summa cum laude from the University of Indiana at Bloomington in 1989. At Iowa he has specialized in teaching and scholarship in intellectual property law subjects. His outstanding teaching won him the university's Collegiate Teaching Award in 2000. He serves as faculty advisor for the Journal of Corporate Law and for the Iowa Intellectual Property Law Society, which he helped found in 1995.

In announcing this award, Hines stated, "I am delighted to confer this Collegiate Scholar in Law honor on Mark Janis in recognition of his outstanding teaching and scholarship in the rapidly evolving field of intellectual property law. Mark is a rising star nationally in this field, as is evidenced by his recent selection by the university to receive one of the coveted University Faculty Scholar awards. His three-year term as the White Collegiate Scholar in Law will coincide with his three years of one-semester releases in time from teaching to concentrate on his research project as a university Faculty Scholar. This support should greatly assist Mark in successfully completing the ambitious project he has undertaken, which involves working out the practical applications of intellectual property law to the burgeoning production of biogenetically altered plant material."

The White Collegiate Scholar in Law award was created through a generous endowment gift to the Iowa Law School Foundation in 2000 by H. Blair and Joan V. White. Mr. White is a 1951 Iowa law graduate who enjoyed a highly successful career as an intellectual property litigator in Chicago. The White endowment will ultimately support a chair in the college in intellectual property law, but in the short term, the Whites have authorized use of the proceeds from the endowment to support the work of a Collegiate Scholar in Law specializing in the intellectual property field.
