UI's Nelson to receive pharmacist award
The Iowa Pharmacy Association's Board of Trustees will present its Health-System
Pharmacist of the Year Award to Steven Nelson, associate director of pharmacy
at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, during the 2002 Iowa Pharmacy
Association annual meeting June 22 in West Des Moines.
The award, supported by the pharmaceutical manufacturing company Pfizer
Inc., was established to annually recognize an outstanding pharmacist who
practices in a health system setting.
Tom Temple, executive vice president and CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Association,
in announcing the award, congratulated Nelson for his selection and said,
"Your commitment to pharmacy in Iowa and the Iowa Pharmacy Association
is greatly appreciated. This award is richly deserved."
Nelson was nominated for the honor because of his ongoing commitment to
patient safety. He has managerial responsibility for the pharmacy's automated
information and drug distribution systems, human resources development, the
department's quality improvement programs, and sterile product compounding
and distribution for the hospital and its affiliated home infusion service.
Nelson joined the staff of UI Hospitals and Clinics in 1985. He served previously
as assistant director and senior assistant director of pharmacy for inpatient
care services, and from 1996 to 1998 as interim department director. Prior
to coming to UI Hospitals and Clinics, he worked for Veterans Administration
hospitals in Columbia, Mo. and Fargo, N.D., where he became chief of pharmacy
services. Nelson is active in the Iowa Pharmacy Association and the American
Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Paul Abramowitz, Pharm.D., director of UI Hospitals and Clinics Department
of Pharmaceutical Care and professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy
at the UI College of Pharmacy, commented, "We are proud and extremely
fortunate to have a pharmacy manager like Steve Nelson on the staff of our
department. We are very pleased that his experience and expertise are being
recognized by the pharmacy profession with this highly distinguished honor."
