UI departments celebrate 25 years of public health education, research

The University of Iowa Departments of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Occupational and Environmental Health will celebrate their 25th anniversary as academic units June 7-8. Alumni and friends of the departments are invited to take part in special events marking the quarter-century milestone.

The three units were originally divisions based in the former UI department of preventive medicine and environmental health. When the UI College of Public Health was established in July 1999, the divisions were transferred into the new college and organized as full departments.

The anniversary celebrations will begin on June 7 with a reception and dinner party at the University Athletic Club. Harrison Spencer, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the Association of Schools of Public Health, will be the keynote speaker. Spencer will address many important developments in public health and comment on the role schools of public health play in supporting the nation's public health system.

Events continue on the morning of June 8 with tours of the departments. Alumni will be guests at a reception and luncheon hosted by UI College of Public Health Dean James Merchant. Following lunch, Merchant will brief alumni on recent collegiate developments in a special "State of the College" presentation.

"We're looking forward to sharing our accomplishments with alumni and friends," said Merchant. "Each of these departments has produced an outstanding body of research, education and service over the past 25 years. The college will continue to build on these strengths as it plans for the future."
