Invent Iowa Students To Display Creations At State Fair Aug. 16

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- (STUDENT NAME) of (HOMETOWN) and a student at (SCHOOL) is one of 30 participants from the 2002 Invent Iowa convention selected to display their inventions in the University of Iowa booth at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines Friday, Aug. 16. His/her invention, (INVENTION NAME), was selected by the UI's Office of University Relations from among hundreds showcased during the 2002 Invent Iowa convention on the UI campus in April.

Invent Iowa is run by the Connie Belin and Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development, which is part of the UI College of Education. The annual convention, hosted by the UI and Iowa State University in alternate years, brings together students in third-grade through high school to demonstrate inventions that they believe will make life easier for people.

Students taking part in the 2002 Iowa State Fair will display their inventions as part of a variety of "acts" the UI is presenting in its booth's Center Stage during the fair's run from Aug. 8 to 18. The UI booth is located in the southwest corner of the air-conditioned Varied Industries Building.

The UI will spotlight dozens of talks, demonstrations and presentations in its Center Stage. In addition to the Invent Iowa students, the UI has scheduled several UI College of Engineering undergraduate students and their BattleBot remote-controlled robot; UI professor of biological sciences David Soll, who will demonstrate his research on the use of sound waves to alleviate swine odor; UI art education professor and storyteller Steve Thunder-McGuire; and members of the UI department of physics and astronomy, who will discuss UI space research, including sights and sounds captured within the solar system. Also located in the booth will be displays and demonstrations by UI Health Care, the Hawk Shop, the UI department of athletics and the Admissions Office. Herky and the UI cheerleaders will also make an appearance at the fair, and visitors can get Hawkeye football posters and tattoos.

For more information about the UI's presence at the fair, including schedules, directions and maps, visit the UI's State Fair website at http://www.uiowa.edu/statefair/.
