Programming problem causes student payroll error
A programming error caused problems with University of Iowa student biweekly
paychecks to be issued Tuesday, Jan. 29. The error caused Social Security
and Medicare taxes to be deducted from student pay so that the check amounts
were smaller than they should have been, according to Joe Joynt, UI payroll
manager. Even though the error was detected late Friday, it was too late to
issue new, correct checks on time, Joynt says. Instead, the university will
issue additional checks in the amount of the incorrect deduction. About 2,198
student employee checks were affected by the error.
"We're sorry for the inconvenience this will cause our student employees,"
Joynt says. "We'll work to see that such errors don't happen again."
The new checks will contain the message "Refund FICA deducted in error
1/29/02." They will be mailed to the same address as the student's regular
check or earnings statement. There will be no direct deposit. The refund checks
should be received in a few days.
