Women's Center offers support group for single mothers

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will sponsor a support group for single mothers on Monday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 28.

"This group fosters open discussion to help women identify their strengths," says Laurie Dix, support group coordinator. "The goal of the group is to reduce isolation and build community among women."

Meetings will be held at the Center, 130 N. Madison St. Childcare will be provided for group members upon request. To register or request childcare, call (319) 335-1486 at least one week in advance. There is no charge for group participation, however, a donation of $10 is suggested.

Women's Center offers support group for women without partners

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer a six-week discussion group titled, "Women Wanting Joy Without Another" on Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 28.

"The group is designed to provide a supportive, friendly community for women without partners," says group services coordinator Laurie Dix. "The group will affirm and celebrate singleness as a way of life, and discuss how women can move beyond societal pressures to have a partner."

There is no charge for group participation, but a $10 donation is suggested. To register, call the Center at (319) 335-1486.

Women's Resource and Action Center to offer discussion group on race relations

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer a new discussion group on race relations this semester. "Whites for Racial Justice" will meet on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 29 at the Women's Resource and Action Center, 130 N. Madison St. "Discussion will focus on what people can do to promote racial equality and justice," says Laurie Dix, group coordinator.

Participants must pre-register. Feb. 5 is the last day for new members to join the group. There is no charge for group participation, however, a donation of $10 is suggested. Participation is open to both men and women. To register, call the Women's Resource and Action Center at (319) 335-1486.

Women's Resource and Action Center to offer workshop on self esteem

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer a six-week, self-esteem support group on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 29.

"Self-esteem affects how we relate with others, what we do and don't do, and how we view the world," says Laurie Dix, group services coordinator. "It is important to examine how our self-esteem is constructed and to realize that we have the ability to change it."

Pre-registration is required for the group. February 5 is the last day new members may join the group. There is no charge for group participation, but a $10 donation is suggested. To register, call the Women's Resource and Action Center at (319) 335-1486.

Women's Center offers discussion group on 'The Gender Puzzle'

The Women's Resource and Action Center will offer "The Gender Puzzle," a weekly discussion group on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 30. The group will explore gender through videos, articles, and Kate Bernstein's book, "My Gender Workbook."

"We will work to build trust so that we can share our lives, stories, gender experiments and realities in an atmosphere of safety and acceptance," says Suzi Steffen, group facilitator. "I encourage people of any gender identity and sexual orientation to join this exciting discussion and journey."

There is no charge for group participation, but a $10 donation is suggested. To register, call (319) 335-1486. Enrollment is limited to 10.

Women's Center offers support group for 'motherless daughters'

"Motherless Daughters," a support group designed for women who have lost their mothers, will be offered on Thursday evenings beginning Jan. 31 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Women's Resource and Action Center, 130 N. Madison St.

"The purpose of the group is to allow women to give voice to their concerns and needs as they adjust to life without a mother," says group facilitator Laurie Dix. "Women are encouraged to build support for each other, to discuss ways to handle common concerns, and to find creative ways to continue along a healing path."

Rebuilding after the loss of a mother is challenging work. Motherless Daughters offers support and fosters community for women in that process. For more information, call (319) 335-1486.

Women's Center offers support group for transgendered individuals

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer a transgender support group on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 31. This group will provide participants a safe environment in which to share their experience of transitioning with others who may benefit from their knowledge.

"There are so few support services for transgendered people in this area. We are excited to offer this much-needed new group," says Laurie Dix, group services coordinator. The group's facilitator has personal experience with transitioning and wants to provide peer support for others.

Pre-registration is required. Feb. 7 is the last day new members may join the group. There is no charge for group participation, but a $10 donation is suggested. The group is open to male to female and female to male transgendered persons, and also to anyone considering transitioning. To register, call the Women's Resource and Action Center at (319)335-1486.

Women's Resource and Action Center to offer seminar on practical activism

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will present a workshop titled, "Practical Activism" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31 at the Center, 130 N. Madison St.

Discussion will focus on opportunities for local activists and allies who are interested in bringing about change in our community and the world. Topics will include how to find contacts for activism and how use time and techniques most effectively.

Women's Center offers eight-week workshop on 'coming out'

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer "Coming Out," an eight-week discussion group beginning Thursday, Jan. 31. The group will explore the joys and concerns surrounding the process of coming out.

"Coming out as lesbian, gay, or bisexual is a life-long process," says Laurie Dix, support group coordinator at the Center. "The discussion group places an emphasis on education and individual integrity. The group does not pressure members to come out in all areas of their life or follow a script. Members have the freedom to define themselves, their sexuality, and their spirituality in a community that will maintain all confidentialities."

Eating disorder support group begins Feb. 4

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will host a six-week eating disorder support group for women. The group will meet at the Center, 130 N. Madison St., on Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. beginning Feb. 4. The group is designed for women who currently have an eating disorder or have experienced an eating disorder in the past.

The workshop is designed to help participants take the first steps towards recovery and/or avoid a recurrence of the disorder. Confidentiality is strictly upheld.

There is no charge for group participation, but a $10 donation is suggested. Call (319) 335-1486 to register for the group and/or to request any accommodations necessary for participation.

Women's Resource and Action Center to offer facilitator training

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa is offering training for people interested in facilitating support and discussion groups at the Center. Many types of groups are offered each semester to provide opportunities to explore, learn, and heal through peer support. Facilitators are needed for support groups dealing with divorce, gender, bi-racial relationships, eating disorders and other topics.

Participants must attend all sessions of the group facilitator training. The schedule is:

-- Tuesday, Feb. 5 -- 6 to 9 p.m.

-- Saturday, Feb. 9 -- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m

-- Tuesday, Feb. 12 -- 6 to 9 p.m.

-- Tuesday, Feb. 19 -- 6 to 9 p.m.

The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer "Exploring Spirituality." This new six-week discussion group will meet on Mondays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 4.

"We are excited to offer this timely new group," says Laurie Dix, group services coordinator. "Participants will consider questions such as: Are there rituals that add meaning to our existence?

How can spirituality be a part of our daily lives? How can we feel spiritually connected? "
