UI Law Graduates Give $500,000 For Environmental Professorship
Two alumni of the University of Iowa College of Law
class of 1976 have committed their personal resources to natural resources
by establishing a professorship in environmental and natural resources law.
Charlotte B. Hubbell and Frederick S. Hubbell, currently
residing in the Netherlands, have given a $500,000 leadership gift to the
Iowa Law School Endowment Campaign for the 21st Century through the
UI Foundation. The gift will support an outstanding teacher/scholar on Iowa's
faculty by establishing the Charlotte and Frederick Hubbell Professorship
in Environmental and Natural Resources Law.
In weighing when to make a gift of this size and purpose,
the Hubbells decided they wanted to make an impact during their lifetimes.
"It's our belief that issues such as land use and water quality are too important
to put on hold," they said. "We hope this professorship stimulates discussion
about these issues."
N. William Hines, dean of the UI College of Law, said,
"Fred and Charlotte Hubbell have made an important and lasting investment
in the breadth and quality of an Iowa legal education through their generous
gift. It gives me great satisfaction to know that the Iowa faculty will always
include a distinguished scholar devoted to environmental law and natural resources
Frederick Hubbell is a member of the executive committee
of ING Group in Amsterdam. The Des Moines native was previously chair, president
and chief executive officer of Equitable of Iowa Companies, an insurance,
annuities and investment company founded by his great-great-grandfather. While
living in Des Moines, Hubbell was a leading volunteer and supporter of several
charitable organizations in Iowa. He has served on the advisory board of Iowa's
Henry B. Tippie College of Business.
Charlotte Hubbell, a native of New Orleans, practiced
law for Willkie, Farr & Gallagher and was chief counsel for operations
at Home Box Office, both in New York City. While living in Des Moines, she
was a director of many civic organizations and served as president of the
Iowa Environmental Council. The Hubbells are longtime supporters of the college;
they are members of the College of Law Dean's Club, and Charlotte Hubbell
served on the Iowa Law School Foundation board of directors before the couple
and their three children moved to the Netherlands in 1999.
The Hubbells' gift is part of the university's planned
comprehensive campaign to advance the UI's strategic goals for the years 2000-2005.
The UI Foundation, the university's comprehensive
