Committee To Conduct Search For New Director And CEO Of UIHC

A 19-person search committee has been formed to conduct a national search for a new director and CEO for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The previous director and CEO, R. Edward Howell, announced last October that he had agreed to become vice-president and CEO of the University of Virginia Medical Center. Howell officially relinquished his duties at UI Hospitals and Clinics on Dec. 19, but he continues to serve in a consultative role. Ann Madden Rice, the chief financial officer of UI Hospitals and Clinics, is also currently serving as interim director and CEO.

Howell served as director and CEO of UI Hospitals and Clinics for more than seven years. He came to Iowa City from the Medical College of Georgia. He will assume his new duties at the University of Virginia on Feb. 25.

David Johnsen, D.D.S., dean of the UI College of Dentistry, will serve as chair of the search committee. Linda Everett, Ph.D., associate director and chief nursing officer of UI Hospitals and Clinics, will serve as vice-chair.

In addition to Johnsen and Everett, UI faculty and staff serving on the search committee include:

-- Paul Abramowitz, Pharm.D., director pharmaceutical care, UI Hospitals and Clinics

-- Willard L. Boyd, professor, UI College of Law

-- David Brown, M.D., professor and head of anesthesia, and vice chair, Faculty Practice Plan Board

-- Sue Buckley, associate vice president, Human Resources-Administrative Services

-- Stacey Cyphert, Ph.D., assistant vice president for Statewide Health Services, and senior assistant director of UI Hospitals and Clinics

-- Charles Helms, M.D., Ph.D., professor of internal medicine, and chief of staff, UI Hospitals and Clinics

-- Bill Hesson, J.D., associate director of UI Hospitals and Clinics, and UI Health Care counsel

-- Susan Johnson, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and associate dean for faculty affairs, UI College of Medicine

-- Phillip E. Jones, Ph.D., vice president of student services, and dean of students

-- Nursing representative (to be determined)

-- Stephanie Powell-Morgan, house staff

-- Dave Smith, electrical technician I

-- Craig Syrop, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology

-- Doug True, vice president, finance and university services

-- Deborah Turner, M.D., Board of Regents, State of Iowa

-- Doug Wakefield, Ph.D., professor and head of health management and policy, UI College of Public Health

-- Richard Williams, M.D. — Rubin H. Flocks Professor and head of urology

Sally Knipfer, in the UI College of Medicine, will provide staff support to the search committee. The firm of Witt/Keifer, an executive search firm serving higher education, health care and other not-for-profit organizations throughout the United States, will also assist the search committee.
