ATCHISON, GILCHRIST TO PARTICIPATE IN CONGRESSIONAL SUBCOMMITTEE FIELD HEARING ON TERRORIST ATTACK RESPONSE

WHAT: A field hearing titled, "How Effectively is the Federal Government Assisting State and Local Governments in Preparing for a Biological, Chemical or Nuclear Attack?"

WHERE: Main Lounge, Iowa Memorial Union

WHEN: 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 22

Christopher Atchison, director of the Iowa Center for Public Health Preparedness and associate dean for public health practice in the UI College of Public Health, and Mary Gilchrist, Ph.D., director of the UI Hygienic Laboratory, are among the witnesses who will participate in the field hearing in Iowa City.

The hearing, held by the Congressional Subcommittee on Government Efficiency, Financial Management and Intergovernmental Relations, will examine the effectiveness and efficiency of federal efforts to assist state and local agencies that would be on the front lines should a biological, chemical or nuclear attack occur.

Witnesses at the hearings also will include representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the General Accounting Office, as well as representatives of state and local agencies responsible for emergency response and recovery efforts.
