UI to host Student Job Fair Aug. 29

University of Iowa students interested in on-campus employment for the Fall 2002 semester are invited to attend a Student Job Fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29 in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.

The fair, sponsored by the University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid, will feature more than 30 employers who will offer on-campus, part-time hourly positions as well as Work-Study positions at both on-campus and at a limited number of eligible non-profit off-campus sites. More than 1,900 students attended the 2001 fair and many received job offers or interviews that day.

Although fewer students will receive Work-Study financial aid awards for the 2002-03 year due to the elimination of the state program, students with Work-Study awards can still select from numerous Work-Study job openings and should not experience any difficulty finding jobs. In addition, students who were not awarded Work-Study will find great opportunities at the fair since many of the employers in attendance will hire students for regular part-time work.

Students who are able to balance the demands of employment and academics can find many benefits in working, including paying for educational expenses without incurring loan debt and gaining valuable work experience to enhance resumes. In addition, on-campus employment offers a variety of unique benefits, including flexible work hours, competitive wages, the opportunity to work with mentors in a career field, and convenient locations often near classes or places of residence. Off-campus non-profit agencies offer a variety of benefits, including the opportunity to work in an agency with a mission to benefit community members.

Staff from the Office of Student Financial Aid will be at the fair to answer questions regarding employment options, verify Work-Study eligibility and explain the payroll process.

For more information about the fair, or about part-time or Work-Study job opportunities, contact the student employment area of the Office of Student Financial Aid at (319) 335-1460. Students can visit the financial aid Web site to view job listings for university and community Work-Study and non-Work-Study jobs. Jobnet, the Web-based advertisement system, is updated daily and can be accessed at the following Web address: http://www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/jobnet .

The Student Job Fair is one of a series of activities held in conjunction with “A Hawkeye Hello!" This annual event has been extended from one to two "Weeks of Welcome" to acquaint new students with the campus, as well as welcome returning students.
