UI DIVISION OF PERFORMING ARTS WILL HOLD PUBLIC AUDITIONS

Auditions have been scheduled for several performing organizations in the University of Iowa Division of Performing Arts, including music, theater and dance groups. Several are open to participation by members of the public as well as UI students.

Public auditions will be held for University Theatres fall productions Thursday-Saturday Aug. 29-31, in Theatre B of the UI Theatre Building, with callbacks Sunday-Monday, Sept. 1-2. Parts will be available in Mainstage productions as well as gallery productions, workshops and readings. Descriptions of the plays on the fall schedule will be posted at the auditions.

A detailed University Theatres audition guide is available from the UI department of theatre arts in the Theatre Building, by phone at (319) 335-2700, or by fax at (319) 335-3568. Auditioners must sign up in advance for an audition time on the Theatre Building callboard. A sign-up sheet will be posted Monday, Aug. 26.

Auditioners should prepare one or two monologues, with the audition not to exceed four minutes in length. The audition may include singing; for those with taped accompaniments, a cassette player will be provided. Auditioners should bring a recent head shot or other photo, or $1.25 to have a photo taken at the audition.

No affiliation with the department of theatre arts or the UI is required to participate in University Theatres productions, and theatre arts majors are not given special consideration in auditioning or casting. The department is committed to “non-traditional” casting except in cases where a character's race, gender, handicap or age is stipulated in the script.

Auditions for the UI Dance Company's annual Dance Gala in Hancher Auditorium are open to all registered UI students. Auditions will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, in the Loft Studio, Room E201 of Halsey Hall. For additional information about Dance Gala auditions, call the dance department at (319) 335-2228 in advance.

The UI dance department will hold auditions for Dancers in Company, the department's touring repertory company, at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3 in the Loft of Halsey Hall. Dancers in Company is open to all UI dance majors.

Auditions for choral groups will be held the first week of classes, beginning August 26. Each choral group presents one or more concerts of its own, in addition to singing choral concerts with the University Symphony:

--The Camerata Singers has 50-70 singers, including the university students and community members, and presents three concerts each year.

--Kantorei is the premier choral ensemble of the School of Music. It is a touring ensemble limited to approximately 30 singers, most of whom are graduate students. Kantorei presents four or five concerts on campus each year and tours to off-campus performances. Auditions are open to all UI students. Superior sight-reading ability is desirable.

--University Choir is a select, advanced choir of 50-60 singers, primarily undergraduate students. Auditions are open to any student with sight-reading ability.

--Women’s Chorale is a select chorus of approximately 40 women who sing three to four concerts each year.

Singers are asked to prepare an aria, art song or any other song they know well, although a prepared song is not required. All auditioners will be tested on their voice range, timbre, music reading ability and listening skills. An accompanist will be provided.
