UI researchers receive grant for leadership training in pediatric dentistry

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry recently received a five-year, $1 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for its leadership training program in pediatric oral health.

Michael Kanellis, D.D.S., associate professor and head of the UI department of pediatric dentistry, will use the grant to continue the college's Center for Leadership Training in Pediatric Dentistry. The center provides postdoctoral training of pediatric dentists as leaders in education, research, public health administration and advocacy, as well as primary care specialists in oral health programs for mothers and children. The grant also will be used to develop curricula, teaching modules and other educational resources, and for continuing education, consultation and technical assistance related to pediatric oral health.

Dental residents supported by the grant received a certificate in pediatric dentistry and a master's degree in dental public health. Kanellis directs the advanced training program in pediatric dentistry. Steve Levy, D.D.S., professor in the UI department of preventive and community dentistry, directs the advanced training program in dental public health.

The UI was one of three universities to receive the HRSA training grant, along with the University of North Carolina and the University of Washington.
