MEDIA ADVISORY:

Local Program To Ship 300 Computers To Nigeria

WHO: The WiderNet Project

WHAT: WiderNet Project volunteers will spend the weekend packing a cargo container with 300 locally-donated computers, networking equipment, books, journals, and CD-ROMs to go to our partner universities in Nigeria.

WHEN: Friday, April 26, noon to 7 p.m., and Saturday, April 27, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WHERE: International Center, Ferson Avenue, Iowa City

WiderNet is a nonprofit project based at the University of Iowa that aims to build bridges between the UI and universities in developing countries by assisting faculty and students with access to computers, email and the Internet. Thanks to the generosity of many people in Eastern Iowa, 300 computers have been collected to send. Volunteers will be packing and loading equipment into a 40-foot cargo container for a shipment that will leave Iowa City on April 29 and go to the universities of Jos and Ibadan in Nigeria, West Africa.
