Candlelight vigil to focus attention upon eating disorders
The first nationwide candlelight vigil to recognize the challenges faced
by people affected by eating disorders, to encourage healthy living and to
help people "Accept Yourself
Accept Others" will be held at
6:30 p.m., April 20 on the Pedestrian Mall at the corner of Dubuque and Washington
in downtown Iowa City.
The vigil will include a brief program with patients telling their stories
of recovery, a reading of a pledge by Jennie Lillis, a UI student and member
of the Iowa women's basketball team, lighting of candles and a brief moment
of silence. The event will be one of dozens held on campuses across the nation,
in addition to a vigil on The National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Co-sponsors of the national event include the National Association of Anorexia
Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), the eating disorders program of UI
Behavioral Health, Castlewood Treatment Center (St. Louis), Lindenoaks Hospital
at Edward (Naperville, Ill.), The Renfrew Center (Philadelphia) and Delta
Phi Epsilon national sorority.
