Parents Association funds seven campus projects

At its Feb. 23 meeting, the University of Iowa Parents Association Board of Directors voted to allocate a total of $54,327 to fund eight campus projects. The funds are raised through the UI Foundation’s Parents Fund for Student Support. The vote was taken after board members read proposals and heard presentations from representatives of 10 student groups and campus offices.

In considering which proposals to fund, the Parents Association Board of Directors considered its previously established parameters for funding consideration. These include: programs and projects that address safety issues; substance abuse prevention initiatives; programs not available through other formalized funding; existing services or programs; and seed money for programs that have the potential to be self-sufficient in the future.

The programs selected for funding and the amount funded by the Parents Association include:

• $2,960 to the Alumni Association for the Family Weekend 2002 tailgate event;

• $10,000 to the Office of Student Life for Night Hawks, a Friday evening alternate entertainment activity;

• $3,000 to the Office of Student Life for Weeks of Welcome 2002;

• $600 to Orientation Services for mailing new student handbooks to families unable to attend the University’s Orientation program;

• $5,237 to Residence Services for Night Games, an alcohol-free weekend event;

• $20,530 to UI Student Government for a safety initiative that includes updating the blue cap emergency phone system; and

• $12,000 to UI Public Safety for the purchase of air tasers.

Previously funded projects include Sesquicentennial Scholarships, campus lighting and emergency telephones, e-mail stations at the Iowa Memorial Union, the Safewalk program, the Parent Calling Project and the Stepping Up Project's alcohol-free tailgate.

All parents of UI undergraduates are members of the Parents Association. The Parents Association board is currently made up of 29 parents, who travel to Iowa City at their own expense three times a year to advise and support the goals of the UI, and volunteer their time and expertise to assist other UI parents with questions and concerns.
