UI nurses guest editors of pain management publication
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Two University of Iowa Health Care nurse researchers
recently served as guest editors for a publication devoted to enhancing pain
management among critically ill patients.
The June 2001 issue of "Critical Care Nursing Clinics of North America"
focused upon pain management in critical care. Barbara A. Rakel, Ph.D., an
advanced practice nurse with the Clinical Outcomes and Resource Management
office at UI Hospitals and Clinics, and Marita G. Titler, Ph.D., director
of research, quality and outcomes management in the department of nursing
and patient care services at UI Hospitals and Clinics, are listed as the guest
editors of the publication.
Rakel and Titler note in their preface that unrelieved pain delays recovery,
increases health care costs and is associated with a higher rate of complications,
such as post-operative infections and blood clots. The publication features
articles from UI Health Care nurse researchers and other nursing specialists,
pharmacists, and physicians who are nationally and internationally recognized
for their expertise in pain management.
University of Iowa Health Care describes the partnership between
the UI College of Medicine and the UI Hospitals and Clinics and the patient
care, medical education and research programs and services they provide. Visit
