UI Alumni Band to perform at Homecoming pregame show
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Members of the University of Iowa Alumni Band will dust
horns for the annual Homecoming trip back to their alma mater this weekend,
but they will have a special duty this year. They will have the great honor
of performing solo at the Homecoming pregame show Sept. 29.
As part of their "Take Back the Field" reunion, the Alumni Band,
which is sponsored by the UI Alumni Association, will continue their tradition
of playing during the homecoming parade Sept. 28 and will join the Hawkeye
Marching Band on the field at halftime. But the addition of the pregame performance
came about with the help of Hawkeye Marching Band Director Kevin Kastens.
"A number of Iowa marching band alums have told me that they wanted
to have more involvement in the Homecoming festivities," said Kastens.
"I thought their performance of the traditional pregame show on Homecoming
would be a great opportunity for them to show they've still got what it takes
to be a Hawk! Our fans in Kinnick Stadium will enjoy this special performance."
The Alumni Band will play "On Iowa," the "Star Spangled Banner"
and the "Iowa Fight Song" for the pregame show, and "America
the Beautiful" for the combined halftime performance. A total of 204
band members from around country will gather for the Homecoming festivities.
