Two companies scheduled for Hancher shows have canceled in wake of terrorist tragedy

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Travel uncertainties and restrictions have forced two companies to cancel scheduled performances in the University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium.

Canada's O Vertigo Danse, scheduled for Oct. 19, and the Afro-Cuban All Stars, scheduled for Halloween night, have canceled their tours.

Juan de Marcos Gonzalez wrote on behalf of the Afro-Cuban All-Stars: "The Afro-Cuban All Stars extend their heartfelt sympathies to all those touched by the terrible acts of terrorism that took place on Sept. 11, 2001.

"In the wake of these tragic events, we have decided to cancel our Fall US Tour for 2001. This was a very difficult choice for us, and we deeply regret the unfortunate circumstances surrounding this decision. The decision was a personal one for all the group members and their families, many of whom are very concerned about their loved ones' well-being and security while touring in the United States with the possible threat of a protracted conflict in the coming weeks and months.

"The Afro-Cuban All Stars recognize the importance of a continued cultural exchange, and the importance of the arts in all communities. We still feel strongly about sharing our music with audiences in the United States, and the entire world as well."

The Hancher box office will contact ticketholders with refund information.
