Students of St. Petersburg Conservatory, Nov. 7, represent new generation of Russian music

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Hancher Auditorium will present a concert by Students of the St. Petersburg Conservatory at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus. The tour of the Students of the St. Petersburg Conservatory celebrates the 400th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg by Czar Peter the Great.

Nine musicians -- all current graduate students or recent graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory -- will, in various combinations, perform works not only by conservatory alumni and faculty including Prokofiev, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky, but also Scriabin, Dvorak, Rachmaninoff and Gershwin.

The performers will be the Nevsky String Quartet, pianists Tatiana Bezzubenkova and Pyotr Laul, violinist Pavel Popov, and vocalists Alexandra Kovaliova, soprano, and Pyotr Migunov, bass.

During their visit to Iowa, some the St. Petersburg musicians will also present a free mini-performance at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in the Cedar Rapids Public Library. Others will visit UI classes and an upper level Russian class at Cedar Rapids Washington High School.

The St. Petersburg Conservatory, located in Russia's cultural capital, has been at the heart of the nation's musical life for nearly 140 years. Its illustrious alumni have included Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Jasha Heifetz and Shostakovich; and its faculty has featured not only Rimsky-Korsakov, but also Alexandr Glazunov, Anton Rubinstein, Henryk Wieniawski and Leopold Auer.

The Nov. 7 performance is supported by Group 5 Hospitality/Radisson Highlander Plaza and Prairie Lights, through the University of Iowa Foundation.

Tickets are $23 ($10 for UI students, $18.40 for senior citizens and $11.50 for youth) from the Hancher box office.
