UI Arts Share program opens 2001-02 on-campus events with school matinee of 'O Pioneers!'

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Arts Share program, which shares the academic arts resources of the University of Iowa with communities throughout the region, will open its 2001-2002 schedule of on-campus events for schools with a Tuesday, Oct. 16 matinee performance of "O Pioneers!", the musical based on Willa Cather's beloved novel of prairie life in the late 19th century.

The University Theatres production, with script by UI alumna Darrah Cloud and music by Kim. D. Sherman, will be presented for secondary-school groups at 10 a.m. in E.C. Mabie Theatre of the UI Theatre Building. An extensive "O Pioneers!" study guide is available to participating schools.

Published in 1913 and based on Cather's childhood experiences in western Nebraska, "O Pioneers" is a classic of American literature renowned for its vivid portrayal of the challenges of life on the plains. The book chronicles the struggles, sacrifices and triumphs of Alexandra Bergson, a fiercely independent and determined Swedish immigrant who overcomes tremendous hardships to build a life for her family on the desolate Nebraska prairie.

The Cloud/Sherman musical version of "O Pioneers!" has been an enduring hit -- produced frequently throughout the country, by regional, college and community theaters.

Tickets are $4 (teachers attending with school groups are admitted free). Call 319-335-1618 for reservations.
