The Old Capitol bell, damaged in the Nov. 20 fire that destroyed the gold dome and cupola atop the National Historic Landmark building, lies in pieces after being recovered from the fire site Wednesday, Nov. 28. The bell is a part of University of Iowa history, having been rung for more than 100 years to announce academic and sporting events as well as mark events in U.S. history.
