UI Arts Share Program will present a series of jazz performances in Marshalltown
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Arts Share program will present
a series of performances by the University of Iowa Jazz Faculty Ensemble on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 19-21, in public and parochial schools
throughout the Marshalltown area. The three-day event continues a three-year
partnership between Arts Share and Marshalltown schools.
The performances are sponsored by Arts Share, and Arts and Children Together,
Inc. and are made possible, in part, by a grant from Alliant Energy Foundation.
The UI Jazz Faculty Ensemble, a jazz repertory ensemble, is comprised of
faculty members from the UI department of jazz studies at the School of Music.
Director John Rapson has been an associate professor of music and director
of jazz studies at the UI since 1993. He has had previous appointments at
Westmount College in California and at Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
He has appeared on numerous albums, five of which were recorded under his
leadership. Mark Gridley has characterized his music as extending several
trends that were first demonstrated by Charles Mingus and George Russell.
The UI Arts Share program provides artistic resources from the Iowa Center
for the Arts to schools and community organizations. The 2001 Arts Share roster
includes more than 70 faculty and graduate students in music, theater, dance,
the visual arts and creative writing.
