Video Center receives two awards from Iowa Motion Picture Association
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Video Center received two media
awards at the Iowa Motion Picture Association's "Showcase Iowa 2001"
Awards Ceremony Saturday, May 12, held at the Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines
-- one for a documentary, and one for a half-time program aired during basketball
"Showcase Iowa" annually honors the "best and the brightest"
with awards for excellence in Iowa film and video production.
The first-place Award of Excellence in the documentary category was presented
to the Video Center for its program, "James Van Allen: Flights of Discovery,"
which was narrated by NBC anchor Tom Brokaw. Accepting the award was the Video
Center's Steven Henke, who served as director and editor of the program.
Henke thanked the IMPA for the recognition and David Welsh of Blooming Tree
productions, co-executive producer of the project, for his efforts to secure
donations for the project. Charitable sponsors of the program were the Roy
J. Carver Charitable Trust, the R.J. McElroy Trust and the Iowa Arts Council.
Henke also expressed gratitude to Van Allen, "who enunciated the documentary
filmmakers' credo in the show when he said, 'There's always one more thing
you need to know, if you want to get the whole picture.'"
Henke acknowledged the efforts of the UI Video Center project development
team, which included Daniel Lind (co-executive producer), Catherine Wissing
(video production), Brian Gilbert (special effects and audio) and Scott Drake
(research), as well as additional team members Wayne Anderson and Warren Byerly
(Images Productions) and Clay Bergren (Differentiation Strategies). He also
thanked Brokaw for doing the narration, and Iowa Public Television for broadcasting
"Flights of Discovery" twice in April.
In the TV News Feature or Series Category, the Video Center received the
IMPA Award of Achievement for "University Update: The University Hygienic
Laboratory." This program was one of 13 informational/news segments broadcast
during Iowa basketball halftimes this past season. In addition to the Video
Center staff, other university faculty, staff and departments contributed
to the production of this program, including Steve Parrott, director of University
Relations, and many of the staff at the University Hygienic Laboratory, especially
Dr. Mary Gilchrist and Jack Cameron.
