UI's Virtual Hospital named among top 50 Web sites by Scientific American
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa's Virtual Hospital is one of 50
Web sites to be named a winner of Scientific American's first-ever "SciTech
Web Awards 2001."
The awards represent Scientific American's choices as the best science and
technology sites on the World Wide Web. The publication selected five Web
sites from 10 categories; the Virtual Hospital was included in the "Medicine"
category. Other Web sites listed in this category were Gray's Anatomy, the
Visible Human Project, the Big Picture Book of Viruses, and HIV InSite. The
complete list of winners can be found at the Scientific American Web site:
Writing about the Virtual Hospital, the Web editors at Scientific American
said, "Medical professionals and laypeople alike will find an abundance
of health-care information at this digital health sciences library, courtesy
of the University of Iowa. Here visitors can read up on asthma, view dissected
human brains, watch an x-ray video clip of the human ankle in motion, consult
a booklet on hip replacement -- the list goes on."
Founded in 1992 by faculty and staff members in the UI department of radiology,
the Virtual Hospital was one of the first 250 sites on the Web. Virtual Hospital
content is drawn from UI Health Care faculty, including emeritus and junior
faculty and medical residents. About 150 faculty authors have contributed
their work. The Virtual Hospital serves not only as a resource for information
for health care professionals and the public, but also as an entrance point
for people interested in receiving health care at the UI Hospitals and Clinics.
The Virtual Hospital also delivers continuing education to health care providers.
In 2000, more than 7.9 million people visited the Virtual Hospital site
from around the United States and the world.
The Virtual Hospital can be found on the Web at www.vh.org.
