UI Dancers in Company visits Muscatine High School
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Dancers in Company, the touring
repertory ensemble of the University of Iowa dance department, will present
an informal lecture demonstration for students at Muscatine High School on
Thursday, March 22.
The event is part of a busy season of concerts and
educational activities for Dancers in Company, including performances and/or
discussions in Iowa City, Coralville, Waterloo and Dubuque in March, and a
formal concert in Ft. Madison in May.
The 12-member ensemble, which is chosen by audition,
provides UI dance students with practical experience similar to that encountered
by professional touring dance companies. The student dancers are required
to maintain a diverse repertory while coping with travel and performing in
a variety of facilities. Co-directors of the company are faculty members Jeffery
Bullock and Charlotte Adams.
The Dancers in Company repertory features a wide variety
of dance styles, from ballet to modern dance to ethnic movement, including
dances selected especially for educational events with young audiences.
The 2001 Dancers in Company repertory features Adams
"Big Bucks for LuLu," a circus-flavored piece choreographed for
the UI Dance Companys Dance Gala 2000 last fall in Hancher Auditorium;
the ballet "Of Grace, Harmony and Joy," a trio by graduate student
Penny Askew; another Dance Gala 2000 piece, the energetic "Teeth"
by faculty member Alan Sener, featuring music by Naked Funk, Coldcut and Pressure
Funk; Bullocks "On an Overgrown Path," a poetic dance with
music by Janacek; and "When I Dream" by faculty member Armando Duarte,
set to music by Bobby McFerrin.
Dancers in Company will also perform two pieces by
guest choreographers, the dance/theater piece "Rocky Mountain Low"
by UI alumna Sara Semonis; and a new work to music by Messaien, choreographed
by David Capps, a dance faculty member at the University of Colorado. Capps
is the artistic director of David Capps/Dances.
The 2001 company members are undergraduates Julie
Hawkins, Bronwen Healy, Kristen Kramer, Jennifer Nakashima, Jennifer Otto,
Jessica Panosh, Emily Price, Katie Shea, Melinda Sloane, Daniel Spak and Rachel
Linnea Urie, and graduate student Audra Sokol.
Dancers in Company 2001 performances and educational
events have been made possible through the support of Target, Alliant Energy
and Principal Financial Group.
