MIRACLE BURN CAMP OF IOWA MEDIA DAY JULY 11 AT EAST LAKE
Media representatives are invited to attend Media Day at the Miracle Burn
Camp of Iowa on Wednesday, July 11 at Camp Foster in East Lake Okoboji, Iowa.
Miracle Burn Camp of Iowa began as a one-day outing for children with burn
injuries, ages 7 to 17, in 1995. It has evolved into a weeklong event and
is jointly sponsored by St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City and
the Children's Hospital of Iowa Burn Treatment Center at University of Iowa
Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. This year's camp runs July 8-14.
The cost for each child to attend camp is $450, which is raised by the Burn
Treatment Center through a variety of fundraising efforts, private donations
and local fire department and other community activities.
More than 60 campers, half of them sponsored by the University of Iowa Burn
Treatment Center, are scheduled to attend this year's Miracle Burn Camp of
Iowa. Campers are coming from Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Michigan, Wisconsin
and Connecticut. Campers will participate in horseback riding, fishing, skiing,
archery, canoeing, arts and crafts, swimming, sailing, and various physical
The goals of the Miracle Burn Camp of Iowa include providing pediatric burn
survivors a fun summer camp experience in a non-threatening environment, providing
esteem building opportunities through physical activity and attainment of
personal goals, and allowing staff and patient interaction away from the intensity
of painful procedures in the hospital setting.
Miracle Burn Camp of Iowa is conducted by a professional staff of firefighters,
burn survivors, burn care professionals and YMCA Camp experts who volunteer

NOTE TO EDITORS: Burn survivors, their families, Miracle Burn Camp of Iowa
sponsors, and UI Hospitals and Clinics staff also will attend a Miracle Burn
Camp Picnic from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at Pavilion #12 in Lower City
Park in Iowa City. The event is to welcome back local Miracle Burn Camp of
Iowa campers following their return from East Lake Okoboji.
