Chen to address Asian social, cultural issues Jan. 22, 23

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Kuan Hsing Chen, professor of cultural studies at the National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, will address social and cultural issues emerging in the Asian region during a visit to the University of Iowa. He will speak on "Club 51: On the Culture of U.S. Imperialism" at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22 in Room W401 Pappajohn, followed by a reception.

Chen will also meet with a luncheon seminar on "The Location of Inter-Asia Cultural Works" from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 in Room 302, Schaeffer Hall and will discuss "The Location of Inter-Asia Cultural Works" from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23 in Room 101 BCBS.

Chen holds a Ph.D. from the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communications. He is currently co-executive editor of "Inter-Asia Cultural Studies: Movements." Women's Center offers support group for single mothers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will sponsor a support group for single mothers on Monday evenings from 6 to 7:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 29.

"This group fosters open discussion to support women in identifying and building on their strengths," says Keri Neblett, support group coordinator. "The goal of the group is to reduce isolation and build community among women."

Meetings will be held at the Center, 130 N. Madison Street, Iowa City. Childcare will be provided for group members upon request. Please call (319) 335-1486 at least one week in advance to register.

Women's Center offers eight-week workshop on 'coming out'

IOWA CITY, Iowa --The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer "Coming Out," an eight-week discussion group beginning Tuesday, Jan. 30. The group will explore the joys and concerns surrounding the process of coming out.

"Coming out as lesbian, gay, or bisexual is a life-long process," says Keri Neblett, support group coordinator at the Center. "The discussion group places an emphasis on education and individual integrity. Members have the freedom to define themselves, their sexuality, and their spirituality in a community that will maintain all confidentialities."

Women's Resource and Action Center offers 'Queer Women of Color'

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer a new support group, Queer Women of Color, on Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 30.

This six-week group is designed to offer a safe space for queer women of color to come together and discuss issues pertinent to their lives. "I felt this group would be important for individuals who are seeking a way to connect, find like community, and discuss issues that are significant to them as lesbian, bisexual and transgendered women of color," says the group's facilitator.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will offer "Exploring Relationships" on Wednesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 31.

"This six-week support group will focus on making the most out of relationships: strengthening and building skills that will help current and/or future relationships be more positive and rewarding," says Keri Neblett, group coordinator at the Center.

Women's Center offers workshop on rallying for social change

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women's Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will present a workshop on how to plan and organize a rally for social change on Wednesday,
Jan. 31 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Penn State Room of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Laurie Haag, program developer at the Center, will be the facilitator for the seminar. "We'll cover issues including defining the event's purpose, planning and logistics, media and publicity and other concerns," says Haag. "Rallies set the public's image of our social movements; we need to organize them mindfully."
