UI CAMPUS NOTES -- IOWA CENTER FOR THE ARTS

STEFANIAK READS 'LIVE FROM PRAIRIE LIGHTS' JAN. 26 -- Fiction writer Mary Helen Stefaniak, a graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, will read from her work at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, in the Prairie Lights bookstore at 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City.

The free reading will be broadcast on the "Live From Prairie Lights" series, originating on UI radio station WSUI, AM 910.

Stefaniak's work has been published in numerous periodicals, including Redbook, the Iowa Review, Iowa Woman, Short Story, the Yale Review, the North American Review, AGNI Review, the Briar Cliff Review and the Source.

She is the author of a collection of short stories, "Self Storage," and a novella, "The Turk and My Mother."

Stefaniak is a regular on the faculty of the UI Summer Writing Festival and in the Grant Wood AEA's Young Writers Conference at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, and she has worked as fiction editor for the Iowa Review.

Sharon Oard Warner, author of "Learning to Dance and Other Stories," wrote of "Self-Storage," "What a joy these stories are! Spun from the stuff of everyday life, they are carefully constructed, lovingly sewn, and touched here and there by the miraculous. Mary Helen Stefaniak knows her craft, and she is a wonderfully humane writer. These are transformative tales… The world around us is the same but we are changed, our awareness heightened, our empathy renewed."
