On November 20, 2001, a fire destroyed the landmark gold dome and cupola on the historic
Old Capitol building at the University of Iowa.

The day after the fire, Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack toured the inside of the building with UI administrators to view the damage. Interior damage was primarily caused by water and smoke.
