Carl Bendorf to head health sciences fund-raising at UI Foundation

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Carl J. Bendorf of Iowa City has been named assistant vice president for health sciences center development at the University of Iowa Foundation. Bendorf will supervise a staff of nine development officers in their fund-raising efforts for the UI Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing, as well as for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

A member of the UI Foundation staff since 1990, Bendorf has been assistant vice president for gift planning there since 1999, focusing on estate gifts, life-income gifts, bequests, trusts and other forms of major and deferred giving. Since June he has been interim assistant vice president for health sciences center development.

“Carl will bring considerable leadership, energy and enthusiasm to this key fund-raising position for the UI’s health science areas,” said Steve Sanders, UI Foundation vice president for development programs.

Bendorf said, "Private gifts to the UI Foundation will continue to play a crucial role in advancing the mission of one of the finest health centers in the country. I'm very excited about working with the many friends and alumni who support our health science colleges and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics."

A native of Amana, Iowa, Bendorf received his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the UI in 1976. He is president-elect of the Eastern Iowa Planned Giving Council, and he has written several journal articles and made numerous presentations locally and nationally on issues in planned giving. He is a graduate of the Iowa City Community Leadership Program, class of 2000.

The UI Foundation is the preferred channel for private contributions to all areas of the university. Foundation staff work with alumni and friends to generate funds for scholarships, professorships, facilities improvements, equipment purchases, research and other UI initiatives.
