Public Safety makes arrest in UI assault case
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety has
arrested a man in connection with several reported assaults on campus late
Sunday night. At 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, UI officers arrested Johnny Lee Jones,
34, no known address. Jones was charged with assault with intent to commit
sexual abuse, false imprisonment and two charges of simple assault.
On the afternoon of Aug. 7, investigators received information that a person
matching the description of the suspect may have been in the Iowa City area
Aug. 6, the day after someone attempted to assault three staff members at
University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. They subsequently learned that he
had traveled by bus to Waterloo and checked himself into a shelter.
Investigators drove to Waterloo and interviewed Jones, who admitted to the
assaults. He was driven back to Iowa City and placed in the Johnson County
The first incident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. Sunday. A male suspect
followed a female staff member onto an elevator and grabbed her. She escaped
her attacker when the elevator door opened.
The second incident occurred approximately five minutes later at 11:20 p.m.
Another female staff member was grabbed while in a hallway. She also fled
from her assailant.
The third incident occurred outside a parking ramp near the hospital between
11:25 p.m. and 11:40 p.m. The same suspect approached a female staff member.
She pushed him away and reported the encounter to a parking ramp cashier.
