UI is the only Iowa school listed as 'Best Buy' in new Fiske college guide

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa offers an inexpensive and high quality education, according to The Fiske Guide to Colleges 2002. The UI is the only Iowa institution on the Fiske list of 43 "Best Buy" colleges and universities, which were determined by the quality of the academic offerings in relation to the cost of attendance.

The Fiske Guide, edited by Ted Fiske, former New York Times education editor, does not rank universities numerically, but assesses the strengths and weaknesses of some 300 of the top colleges and universities in the United States and Canada in terms of academic strength, social life, and overall quality of life.

"I am pleased that Fiske has identified the University of Iowa as a place that is committed to high quality undergraduate experience," UI President Mary Sue Coleman said. "This recognizes the university’s efforts to maintain and improve its position among the top research universities in the country, while remaining accessible to all Iowans."

The guide calls the UI "one of the most dynamic schools in the country," and says the wide range of strengths, from creative writing to the health sciences, attracts students to "this budget Ivy League."

"The University of Iowa not only boasts a beautiful campus, it offers its students a broad range of academic programs, an abundance of social activities, and a sense of belonging," the guide says. "With its combination of quality academics, mammoth resources, renowned specialty programs, and extensive research opportunities, this Midwest school is anything but featureless."

Michael Barron, UI director of admissions, said Fiske’s recognition of the broad scope of academic opportunities at the UI for such a low cost was extremely gratifying.

"We’ve been telling students that there is no limit to what they can achieve here at the University of Iowa," he said. "There is so much opportunity because of the breadth of the place. It’s great to have this external confirmation from a prestigious source like the Fiske Guide to reinforce our message."

The Fiske "Best Buy" recognition follows on the heels of Newsweek/Kaplan College Catalog 2002 naming the UI one of the top schools in the country for supporting diversity.
